Modes of Realising - Wohnen. Atlas 2017/2018

Student Projects

The Atlas „Modes of Realising: Wohnen“ deals with dwelling. The title refers to different modes of practicing housing: drinking coffee in the laundry room, investing millions, building an elevated level in the living room, spraying graffiti at a youth centre – dwelling is everywhere. The rhythms, actor constellations and practices that make up dwelling are depicted fragmentarily in this Atlas. It is to be read as a snapshot in time, content and perspective.

The current production of housing demands a deconstruction: 10.000 new flats (3.000 of those social housing) are Hamburg’s answer to the (new) housing crisis. This practice of problem-solving misses the processual character of the urban.

The flats that are being built do not match the existing or future social structures. Societal changes – such as the ageing of the population, flexibilized working conditions and newer types of families – are reflected only in the monetary and hegemonic dimensions of housing production. Which Modes of Realising produce the complexity of dwelling?

Modes of Researching deal with the (re)productive character of research in relation to housing production. In Modes of Mapping we depict temporal, spatial and emotional approaches and means of access. The various Modes of Using focus on use and its traces. The instruments and intentions that come with the organisation of housing are examined in Modes of Organising. Modes of Meeting open up practices of encounter and their spatial manifestation. (Im)material layers of representation are thematised in Modes of Representing.

Modes of Reading: This Atlas can be read across.
The composition does not follow a hierarchy or chronological structure. The assembly of the contents produces thematic proximities. Layout, design and haptic of the Atlas underline the fragmentary composition, which is made visible diagrammatically. The reference structure encourages the reader to explore relations and interdependencies – like the urban itself the Atlas intends to show complex Modes of Realising.
